Komodo Phinisi Charter FAQ
Common questions answered for prospective charterers
Below are the questions our charter desk answers most often during the inquiry phase. They cover pricing, season, vessel choice, family suitability, dive logistics, dragon encounters, and the small operational details that prospective charterers reasonably want to understand before committing to a 7-day private voyage.
What is a phinisi exactly, and why does it matter?
A phinisi (also spelled pinisi) is a traditional Indonesian wooden schooner originating from the Konjo and Bugis seafarers of South Sulawesi. The hulls are hand-shaped from ironwood and teakwood at the Tana Beru shipyard using methods passed across generations. UNESCO inscribed pinisi shipbuilding on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017. A modern phinisi built in the past five years is fitted out to luxury yacht standards while preserving the heritage craft. The matter is both cultural authenticity and material — you are sleeping inside a hand-carved wooden vessel rather than a fibreglass-and-aluminium production yacht. Our comparison guide covers this in depth.
How much does a 7-day Komodo phinisi charter cost?
All-in for the entire vessel and crew, USD 25,000 to USD 80,000 depending on size and season. The figure is not per person — for a family of eight on a mid-size 38-metre vessel this typically works out to USD 5,000-7,000 per person inclusive of accommodation, all meals, fuel, and full crew. Our cost breakdown details the variables.
When is the best time to book?
Peak windows in July-August and the Christmas-New-Year holiday should be booked 12-18 months ahead. High shoulder months (May, June, September, October, November) require 6-12 months lead time. Low season (January-March) is comfortable 3-6 months ahead. Our month-by-month guide covers the optimisation windows.
How do we get to the embarkation point?
All voyages embark and disembark at Labuan Bajo on the western tip of Flores Island. Komodo Airport (LBJ) receives daily direct flights from Bali (Denpasar — DPS), Jakarta (CGK), and Surabaya (SUB), typically 60-90 minutes from Bali. International travellers route through Bali. Our charter desk arranges airport pickup and disembarkation transfer at no extra cost.
Are children welcome on board?
Yes. We host families with children of all ages routinely, and the chef adapts the menu accordingly. The vessel is safe for children with appropriate supervision — open decks, swim platforms, and shore landings all require parent oversight. For families with very young children (under 4) we sometimes recommend the smaller phinisi as more contained. Most family charters bring three generations.
Do we need to be certified divers?
No. Approximately half our guests do not dive at all and stay on snorkel — Komodo’s reefs are exceptionally rewarding at snorkel depth. For certified divers we offer two to four dives per day with the onboard dive master and full PADI equipment. Open Water and Advanced Open Water certification courses can also be arranged on board with prior notice. Discover Scuba (one introductory shallow dive) is available without prior certification.
How close do we get to the komodo dragons?
Encounters are managed by Komodo National Park rangers who escort all groups on the trekking trails. Typical sightings are at 5-15 metres distance for wild dragons in their natural environment. Closer encounters often happen near the ranger compounds where adult dragons rest in the shade — these are still wild animals and ranger guidance must be followed at all times. The treks are scheduled at the cooler ends of the day (early morning or late afternoon) when dragons are most active.
What is the safety protocol on board?
All vessels in our fleet meet Indonesian PT licensing requirements and IMO safety standards. Captains hold STCW credentials, dive masters carry PADI Divemaster ratings or higher, and the vessels carry standard IMO equipment — life rafts, EPIRB, satellite phone, fire suppression, medical kit. Our charter operations include 24/7 onshore medical-evacuation contingency cover. The closest hospital with international standards is in Bali, approximately 80 minutes by air ambulance from Labuan Bajo.
What is the cancellation policy?
Standard charter terms apply: a 30% deposit secures the booking, balance due 60 days before embarkation, with sliding-scale refunds for cancellations made more than 90 days out. We strongly recommend trip-cancellation insurance for the full charter value. Specific terms are documented in your charter agreement.
Can we customise the itinerary?
Yes — almost every charter is customised. Once you have the standard 7-day route, our charter desk works through your preferences: longer at manta points, an extra day at the northern pinnacles, sunrise photography sessions with a local guide, a beach picnic at a private cove, a private chef’s cooking class on the slow day. The captain also adjusts daily based on conditions and group energy.
Is internet available on board?
Yes. Our flagship vessels carry Starlink uplinks delivering 50-150 Mbps in most anchorages — adequate for video calls, email, and streaming. We encourage guests to use the connectivity sparingly to honour the spirit of the voyage, but for business travellers who must remain reachable the infrastructure is available.
